The classical 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West is one of the great source materials for visual media. Though video games get to have a little more fun with the story as indicated by the acclaimed 2009 sci-fi take on the novel titled Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. However, the upcoming action role-playing game Black Myth: Wukong, by Chinese indie developer Game Science, takes a slightly more direct approach, focusing on the novel's most recognized character Sun Wukong, otherwise known as the Monkey King.
However, due to it being funded by an indie developer, the game has a much longer development cycle in play, not expected to be released until 2023 for both PC and main-stream consoles as a one-time purchase with possible DLC's. Still, the game is expected to have challenging gameplay, reminiscent of Dark Souls and Nioh. And today, a 3-minute gameplay trailer has been released that gives some insight into the wild designs of the story, including a large assortment of enemies along with the Monkey King's abilities to transform into flying insects or a giant monster. While this tease might make it hard for gamers excited for this game that they can't have for three years, at least it will wet some whistles. Check it out below:
Stay tuned!
