Courtesy of Total Film, director Nia DaCosta’s upcoming Candyman revival has released new photos and the magazine's film exclusive cover art showcasing a shadowy presentation of the title character along with lead actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Check them out below:
Mateen II plays Anthony McCoy, a character who was last seen as a baby in the original 1992 film, of which the new film is a spiritual sequel to, and was saved from the fire in that film's climax by the character Helen (Played by Virginia Madsen). Speaking with the magazine, Abdul-Mateen II had this to say:
"Man, I remember images of Candyman but I don’t remember sitting down to watch the movie. He lived in my imagination, in the retelling of Candyman. I grew up with Candyman not being a figure from television or movies, but with the possibility of him being a real threat within the house. The dread of Candyman was palpable."
Candyman co-stars Vanessa Williams (Reprising her role as Anthony's mother from the first film) alongside Teyonah Parris, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Colman Domingo, Kyle Kaminsky, Rebecca Spence, and original Candyman actor himself Tony Todd. The film is set to open in cinemas on October 16th.
