Despite not a hit when it came out in 1981, Pennies from Heaven is a film that Steve Martin, who played the lead character Arthur Park, gave his all for giving it was his first dramatic role in a film. He had watched the original miniseries the film was based on and considered it, in his words, "the greatest thing [he'd] ever seen." He wanted to do the part so much he trained for six months learning to tap dance. Despite doing poor at the box office, the film was well-received and continues to be reappraised to this day.
