If Glenn Close and a beglamoured Amy Adams isn't enough to get you to tune into Netflix and watch Hillbilly Elegy, maybe Ron Howard directing it will? No? Does though protest that much? Fine. How about all three combined for a modern day tale that grapples with the frustrations of attaining the American Dream across multiple generations of an Appalachian family? No?
In any case, that is the story at the center of this new film, based on the memoir of same name by J. D. Vance. The film will be from J.D.'s perspective, played by Gabriel Basso, focusing on the former Marine and current Yale Law student who, on the verge of landing his dream job, must return home to face a family crisis when a family crisis. His return to a place he hoped to forget forces him to navigate the complex dynamics of his family. Amy Adams will play his addict mother Bev, of home he has a volatile relationship with, while Close will play his late grandmother Mamaw whose fond memories of raising him haunt him along the way.
