Currently possessing an insane 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, the bizarre dramedy Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn became only the third Romanian film to win the Golden Bear in the last nine years when it made it's worldwide premiere at the 71st Berlin International Film Festival back in March. But, then again, the film has a pretty good case for repression, which is enhanced by setting the film during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The film follows Emi (Played by Katia Pascariu), a school teacher, who finds her career and reputation under threat after a personal sex tape is leaked on the Internet. Forced to meet the parents demanding her dismissal, Emi refuses to surrender to their pressure. The result of this resistance? A wild and endless set of confrontations that has Emi face a repression she has faced in Romanian society long before COVID-19. One that will culminate in a comic confrontation with those who judge her. Apparently one that is so wild that, when it opens in theaters in the US on November 19th, the US version will have over 20 minutes cut from the films initial 106 minute runtime.
