While Keanu Reeves went on to be a big action star, the other half of Bill & Ted, Alex Winter, actually went on to be a well-received, multiple award-winning documentary filmmaker. And it seems appropriate that his newest documentary would in fact be focused on a musician, particularly Frank Zappa.
Simply titled Zappa, the film puts on display the full potential of crowdfunding. In one of the most successful Kickstarter campaigns ever, involving more than 8000 backers who invested more than $1,200,000 in 30 days. Not to mention, it was one that saw Winter given complete access to the family’s vault of rarely-seen footage, courtesy of Zappa's son Ahmet (Who also serves as a producer on the film). With this access, Winter was able to explore the both the private life of Zappa and how that connected to his politically-courageous musical career. In speaking to Rolling Stone, Winter had this to say:
“It’s not your standard album-to-album music doc. It’s really an in-depth examination of an artist’s life, using mostly Zappa’s own words and media from his personal archives. The film is filled with surprises for fans, but I think they will be most struck by the intimacy and a real sense of who Zappa actually was.”
The documentary will also feature a wide assembly of appearances by Zappa's friends and family. This will include his widow Gail Zappa along with several of Frank’s musical collaborators including Mike Keneally, Ian Underwood, Steve Vai, Pamela Des Barres, Bunk Gardner, David Harrington, Scott Thunes, Ruth Underwood, and Ray White. The documentary is set to be released in theaters and on-demand on November 27th. Check out the official trailer for Zappa below:
