South Korean director Park Chan-wook's new film, Decision to Leave, is set to premiere at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival ahead of a theatrical release in the US and the UK in the Fall. The murder mystery will see a detective named Hae-jun (Park Hae-il) investigating the death of a man who falls from a mountain peak to his death. Despite the dead man’s wife Seo-rae (Tang Wei) becoming a suspect, Hae-jun finds himself falling for her. Given the director's approach to romance in films such as Oldboy (2003), Thirst (2009), Stoker (2013), and The Handmaiden (2016), you can assured the romance will have a twisty element to it that will leave you in shock. The official trailer released today doesn't seem to be hiding this fact either:
In addition, two clips have been shown to dive further into the dynamics that will shape this strange film that, while influenced by the crime genre, will contain themes of mystery, drama, romance, and thriller elements:
Chan-wook co-wrote the script with Jeong Seo-kyeong. Go Kyung-Pro, Lee Jung-Hyun, and Yong-woo Park will co-star. Stay tuned!
This guy is genius, Old Boy was maybe the film that shook me up the most.
