Paul Schrader’s crime drama The Card Counter is a highly-anticipated film both for cinephiles and watchful award voters. Serving as a follow-up to writer/director's acclaimed film The First Reformed, the regular screenwriter/collaborator of director Martin Scorsese (Taxi Driver and The Last Temptation of Christ among others) is taking the helm once again for The Card Counter. And now, the film has confirmed it's Fall release in theaters to be September 10th.
The film is a revenge thriller that follows Tell (Played by Oscar Isaac), whose a gambler who is approached by the vulnerable young man Cirk (Played by Tye Sheridan), to help executive his plan for retribution on a military colonel (Dafoe). Tell sees this as a chance at redemption through his relationship with Cirk, but keeping him on the straight-and-narrow proves impossible and drags Tell back into his dark past.
Tiffany Haddish also co-stars in the film. Scorsese serves as an executive producers alongside William Olsson, Lee Broda, Ruben Islas, and Stanley Preschutti. Braxton Pope is producing with Lauren Mann and David Wulf. Focus Features is distributing The Card Counter in the U.S. and parent company Universal Pictures will distribute the film internationally in the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, ANZ, China, and other overseas territories.
