While appearing like a follow-up to his newest film The Father, writer/director Florian Zeller's next film The Son is actually it's own thing, set to focus on adolescent depression. However, the first actors set to join the cast are the parents of the narrative focus. It's just been confirmed today that Hugh Jackman and Laura Dern will take on these roles.
Set in New York, The Son is set to focus on an angry teenage boy named Nicholas who turns up alongside his mother at the door of his busy father (Who has a new partner and baby) when Nicholas's condition worsens. Like The Father, The Son is actually based one of Zeller's own stage plays as part of a trilogy of family-centric dramas. The third part of the series is The Mother which, judging by this course of action, could be adapted next by Zeller.
Zeller will co-write the film adaptation with Christopher Hampton while Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, Joanna Laurie, and Christophe Spadone are producing through See-Saw Films. Stay tuned!
