Ben Wheatley's upcoming Netflix film Rebecca is one he is working hard to point out is not a remake of Alfred Hitchcock's 1940 film (Which won Best Picture) but rather an original approach to the Daphne du Maurier-authored psychological thriller novel that Hitchcock's film was based on. A version Wheatley himself penned alongside Jane Goldman that hopefully let's his own voice shine through.
Like the original film and the book, the story does still have the base story of a whirlwind romance between a wealthy widower (Played by Armie Hammer) and a naive bride (Played by Lily James). Moving to his family estate of Manderley, the bride finds herself unable to escape the haunting shadow of her new husband's late wife. In addition, she finds herself at odds with the psychological manipulations of the housekeeper Mrs. Danvers (Played by Kristin Scott-Thomas).
Today, a trailer has been released to test that theory that the film can get out from under Hitchcock's legendary adaptation. Check it out below:
Rebecca is set to be released on the streaming service on October 21st.
