Supernatural may be ending (With the air date for the series finale announced today, see it here), but looks like Jensen Ackles is going to be just fine afterwards. Following the announcement last week that Shawn Ashmore will appear in season 2 as Lamplighter (See that news here), it's been confirmed that Ackles will be joining Amazon's The Boys for it's already confirmed third season. The image below links to Ackles' Instagram post where he himself confirmed his casting in a short video. The image sees Ackles next to the character he's be playing from the comics, Soldier Boy:
In the comics, Soldier Boy is a parody of Captain America and the "original" superhero who fought in World War II, becoming the first super celebrity and a mainstay of American culture for decades. As some know, The Boys series creator Eric Kripke was the original creator Supernatural and ran the show for it's first five seasons (Which was the original length he planned for the show's storyline). In regards to Ackles' casting, Kripke released the following statement:
“When I was a child, I had a crazy, impossible dream – to provide Jensen Ackles with gainful employment. I’m happy to say that dream has come true. Jensen is an amazing actor, an even better person, smells like warm chocolate chip cookies, and I consider him a brother. As Soldier Boy, the very first superhero, he’ll bring so much humor, pathos, and danger to the role. I can’t wait to be on set with him again, and bring a bit of Supernatural to The Boys.”
This isn't the first Supernatural actor Kripke has hoped to cast in his popular Amazon show. Kripke has also spoken about wanting to cast Jeffrey Dean Morgan to play a role. Although, Kripke acknowledges COVID protocols and Morgan's Walking Dead commitments might prevent this from happening.
Filming on the third season of The Boys is expected to kick off in January with the first four scripts confirmed done and all expected to be ready by the time filming begins. For that season, the show will engage in block shooting, filming two episodes at the same time and with fifteen days scheduled per episode (so effectively four one-month shoots). This drastically compares with shooting for the second season which had twelve days per episode to shoot.
The Boys will premiere the first three episodes of the second season on Friday, September 4th, followed by a weekly rollout with the season finale set to air on October 9th. Stay tuned!
